I fell asleep curled up next to Kaleb as he drove north. It wasn’t a sound sleep at all. I kept seeing weird stuff and getting ‘visitors’ from that guy. I woke, slamming my hand on the door handle, screaming.

“I will help none of you unless you lead us to the girls!” POOF! The visitors were gone.

Kaleb was giving me the oddest look. “So, you’re not wanting to stop for food then?”

I look at him confusedly. “What?” Then I realize what had just happened must not have been taking place in the dream as I had thought. “I’m sorry, just setting some boundaries. But yes, sweetheart, I will eat whenever you’re ready.”

Kaleb looks to grandma in the rearview mirror as grandma shrugs. “The gentleman has a few persistent guests that don’t stay with him.”

I turn as everyone nods. Kaleb rubs my leg as he turns off the freeway. Maya’s phone dings. “Guys!” She calls out. “The undercover wants us back on the highway...we’re being followed.”

Kaleb looks back in the mirror. “They know we had two vehicles, right?”

Maya looks up. “They have people at the campground searching cabins now. We are being followed by a newer, tannish-gold minivan. The guy is alone. Three cars behind our guys.”

I look back at Maya and smirk. “Let’s see who he chases. Kaleb, switch me places.”

I start crawling across the seat and he looks at me. “You’re serious right now? Switch drivers?” I nod at him and I climb onto his lap as he moves out from under me. He started laughing as I had to sit on the edge of the seat to reach the pedals.

I sit up looking in the mirror to Maya. “Have the guys take a right up here back to the highway. We’re going left.”

Maya looks at me. “We only have one tail.”

“Then whoever he follows is covered, right?” I look back. “Time’s ticking, Maya...light’s gonna change.”

Maya was texting as fast as she could. Just as her phone dinged, she got slammed into the door as I turn hard, cutting off a couple cars and narrowly missing a curb too.

That got his attention. He wants to play!
